NAME: Zamasu
CANON: Dragon Ball Super
CANON POINT: The first time he appears in the show, rolling a tea cart, ready to provide his master Gowasu with some tea
AGE: not stated
BACKGROUND: WIKI!
PERSONALITY:
At first glance, he is just the very hard working apprentice of Supreme Kai Gowasu, dedicated to learning how to become the next Supreme Kai of the 10th Universe. He appears to be very calm and focused, values and upholds traditions, and is excellent at serving tea. Next to that, he is a gifted fighter. What also counts is that, before he became Gowasu’s apprentice, he was the Kai that observed the northern part of the 10th universe. All in all, he looks like the perfect candidate.
But, in a way, appearances can be deceiving…
As the opposites of Gods of Destruction, Supreme Kais are responsible for contributing to the balance in a universe. They observe and create planets. And really, having budding misanthropist thoughts and ideas like Zamasu does isn’t going to be of any help when you aspire to gain a position like that. So no, Zamasu is not really big on mortals (and with that he means creatures that possess a certain intelligence to reproduce, prosper and create a society (i.e. humans), not animals). And that dislike is not just a simple thing, like a child who does not want to eat a certain vegetable for instance. No, it is something complex that starts to corrupt and define Zamasu as a person, influencing his actions the more time passes.
What is surprising is that he knows very well that these ideas clash with the morals he should uphold and the role he is going to have after he succeeds Gowasu. He questions their worth because he sees too many conflicts end up in war and the destruction of the planet they live on, he claims that they abuse their godgiven knowledge to destroy what the gods (more specifically the Supreme Kais) have created for them. Next to that he questions the passive role of the Supreme Kais in handling mortal races and refers to the more active roles of the Gods of Destruction in the pantheon of gods they are a part of. Zamasu discusses the matter a lot with Gowasu, fearing for the wellbeing of the universe if mortals go on with their endless cycle of war and destruction. Gowasu tries to convince Zamasu that mortals are key to the development of universes, no matter what they do or how they behave. Because Zamasu respects the words of his master he admits that he is in the wrong.
Despite all of Gowasu’s efforts, Zamasu does not seem to be able to part from his opinions about mortals. Gowasu notices this when Zamasu serves tea. Gowasu is someone who can read a lot out of how a man serves tea and how the tea looks. That is why it is an important part of Zamasu’s daily routine. Gowasu tells him that his tea isn’t clear and that that is a sign that the one serving it does not have a pure heart, that there is something dark eating at him.
And then Goku comes along…
Because of Goku’s mortal status, Zamasu acts wary and distant, constantly trying to get away from him. Goku, however, has no filter and begins to invade Zamasu’s private space with unbridled enthusiasm and eagerness almost immediately, asking him for a fight. What is extremely important about this moment is that this is where Zamasu makes up his mind about the existence of mortals.
Because Zamasu loses the fight he finds himself struggling with the fact that a mere mortal is able to defeat a god. Not once in his entire life as a Kai has he met a mortal who is able to be that powerful. But all those power levels and ki-ratings aren’t the direct reasons why Zamasu decides that mortals are the one evil and a threat to the universe he needs to watch over. It lies within the lack of respect Goku shows and how carelessly he behaves while displaying such power, completely disregarding Zamasu’s pride and dignity as a god.
Zamasu has spent a fairly large part of his life observing a variety of mortals on a variety of planets and many times he has witnessed how these mortals go down the same path over and over. They start to exist, establish themselves on a planet, waste said planet’s resources and destroy everything in a war. To Zamasu this is a waste of the gifts gods gave them and thus a clear sign of disrespect. Because he is a very just person and awfully sincere about what he thinks and feels, he defines his desire to correct them as justice- his justice. To him that is the only correct way to interpret justice. Those who commit a crime need to be punished. It is important to know that throughout Zamasu’s entire transition from a Kai with a strong aversion against mortals, to a full fledged villain who does not bat an eye when it comes to mass genocide, that he always has the well-being of the universe in mind.
Zamasu is not a very open person by nature. He expresses some of his feelings and concerns to Gowasu, but mostly he keeps them to himself. He is incredibly distrustful of others and definitely those that can be defined as mortal. Aside from that, he is absolutely not social or easy to get along with.
Next to Goku’s visit there is another moment that convinces Zamasu to fully give in into the darkness inside of him. During one of their discussions Gowasu wants to prove a point and takes him to the future of a planet they were observing. He wants to convince his apprentice that it is wiser to live and let live and to point out how wonderful the development of a new race is. Unfortunately that is not what has happened to planet Babari in said future. Zamasu and Gowasu are witnesses to yet another mindless war. And it only proves to Zamasu that he is right and Gowasu is terribly, terribly wrong. On top of that one of the creatures starts to attack him and Gowasu by storming at them while holding a large club. Zamasu does not doubt one moment and takes him out with one blow. This marks the moment where Zamasu makes his first kill. And while Gowasu yells at him, he completely zones out, unable to move.
And from that moment on, the tea Zamasu serves is clear again and that is a clear indication that his apprentice's heart is pure again. Gowasu thinks that, despite everything that has happened, he has convinced his apprentice that mortals are worth it.
It is true that Zamasu's heart is pure again, but that is only because he finally made up his mind. Mortals are not worth it and it is time a god would step forward to set the record straight and cleanse the cosmos from this evil threat. It is very important to keep in mind that Zamasu's heart is pure and his quite extreme thoughts are not born out of insanity. He truly thinks this is the right and just thing to do.
The moment Zamasu puts his thoughts into actions by wanting to finish Gowasu off Beerus is the one who stops him. To prevent any further damage in the present timeline Beerus erases Zamasu from existence.
POWERS/ABILITIES:
- He can fly
- He can concentrate his spiritual energy (ki) around his hand and slice things with it (this varies from bread to buildings to people), at times it is just a glowing hand but sometimes it grows longer and takes on the form of a sword
- He can teleport (not in game, though)
- Boss level hand-to-hand combat/martial arts, he's known to be a prodigy fighter and pretty much the strongest of all Kais, it is not easy to defeat him
- He can release an invisible ki blast that increases the distance between himself and an opponent by blowing them away, this comes in handy when fighting in mid-air
- He can release that same blast but then through the ground, it also results with an opponent being blown away
- He can do telekinesis
- Super human strength and speed
- He has this one cool blast that can paralyze someone for a couple of moments and it's just enough so he can kick the crap out of you
- He can heal
- Blast ki
